EU Could Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson Says

The EU could “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the US on five European individuals involved in combating digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official stated.

EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe such as the French president accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions targeted figures that were central to campaigns to introduce laws regulating American tech companies.

“For far too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in criticizing the decision.

The bans were enacted this week on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

This European legislation is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders argue the rules are essential to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This disagreement threatens to become part of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and Europe.

Other Developments in the News

In other legal developments:

  • A US district judge has blocked efforts to cut security grants to states which resist certain immigration enforcement policies. The official ruled the action was “another example” of linking federal aid to policy compliance.
  • Approval was given for the deployment of hundreds of national guard troops to a major US city ahead of the holiday period, coinciding with an active border security initiative.
  • The nation of Palau will consent to accept dozens of migrants from the US in exchange for increased assistance, following concluding a formal agreement with US authorities.

Additionally, a Democratic lawmaker has initiated legal action seeking the removal of the current president’s name from a prominent cultural institution in Washington DC.

Analysts have also noted that comments regarding Venezuelan oil reflect a broader belief in some quarters of “economic expansionism”, leading to parallels with historical international actions.
