Larian Studios Announce a Latest Divinity, Labeling it Their Biggest RPG Ever

The buzz about The Game Awards has been intense, especially after host Geoff Keighley posted a mysterious photo of a strange statue. The mystery has now been solved. Larian Studios is working on a fresh Divinity game.

Announced as Divinity, the game was presented with a bold trailer featuring memorable imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to scenes of revelry and the literal unleashing of hell.

Not the Expected Sequel

Anyone expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. The studio stated ahead of time that a direct sequel to its venerated RPGs is not currently in development.

However, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a continuation of the core franchise. This choice of words suggests that the team might be crafting a real-time experience as opposed to another turn-based title. Currently, it remains theory, as only a teaser video is available.

What Makes Divinity Special

The Divinity series is widely praised and arguably it pioneered the contemporary revival of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are defined by rich lore, player agency, and flexible progression—traits that recently were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its universe is traditional swords and sorcery, what really distinguishes Divinity apart is the immense freedom granted to the player.

While numerous modern RPGs have pared back options, Divinity is packed with niche playthroughs you can achieve if you're playing as a distinct build with a unique decision path.

The series is also notoriously flexible, enabling players to experiment both in story and combat. Nearly every quest can be solved in multiple ways, often in surprising fashion.

  • You might progress the story because you remembered something a non-human character said.
  • Or, you could bypass a challenge by moving environmental hazards in a unorthodox way.

A New Chapter Begins

It is these creative systems that allow people to hail games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games ever made. Now, players can anticipate a new entry in this groundbreaking franchise.
