TikTok Content Creators Driving Parallel Trade for Unapproved Slimming Drug

A shadow economy for unapproved slimming drugs is being driven by TikTok fitness influencers and vendors on messaging platforms, according to new investigations.

Experimental Treatment Acquiring Traction Via Social Media

The experimental drug, which remains in research studies, is being advertised by online personalities for its supposed fat-burning properties. Viewers are urged to message these accounts directly for source information, while also obtaining promotional offers.

Active Trade on Social Networks

Additionally, a flourishing market exists on Telegram, where communities with numerous of participants share “before and after” images, administration instructions and assertions of rapid UK delivery. Vendors promote the substance there before redirecting buyers to WhatsApp for purchases.

Learning About Retatrutide

This medication is an experimental injection created by American pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly. The drug affects three intestinal hormones – GLP-1, glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide and pancreatic hormone. Early trials indicate it could help patients reduce up to 25% of their body weight. Nicknamed the “triple G”, the substance is being promoted digitally as the successor to Ozempic.

Healthcare Professionals Express Worries

However, physicians and pharmacists have warned that the sale of what is still an unapproved drug in the United Kingdom is worrisome and could result in individuals administering substances of unknown origin.

Several professionals said the demand for the experimental drug could be linked to the rising cost of approved weight loss treatments such as Mounjaro.

Regulatory Position and Enforcement

Marketing retatrutide on social media or Telegram is illegal in the United Kingdom, as it is an unlicensed drug that cannot be marketed or distributed for personal consumption under the Human Medicines Regulations 2012.

Some influencers attempt to sidestep the rules by referring to the substance as a “research chemical” or citing it as “not for human consumption”. The substance is not a controlled substance, but advertising and distribution can still violate medicines, advertising, and customer laws, risking penalties, legal action or imprisonment.

Platform Response and Content Removal

According to the social media company, the service has taken down problematic content and prohibited related keywords and query recommendations. The company said it was dedicated to maintaining the platform secure and investing in strengthening compliance measures.

Online Marketplace Activities

Investigations also found groups with up to 9,000 members selling retatrutide using the platform's built-in discovery tool, which functions like a online catalog. Entering “retatrutide” instantly displays channels with thousands of users, populated with images of weight loss, positive testimonials and detailed guides for mixing or administering at home.

Within moments of joining one group, a seller posted WhatsApp details, where most transactions take place. The vendor sent an instruction manual and promised delivery within two days. When asked whether the substance was authentic, one vendor said: “You can’t be sure.” Another shared a photo of a supposed laboratory certificate. None asked about body mass, medical conditions or previous experience.

Item Information and Costs

Inside these communities, messages display dark colored packages with postal service labels, stating to contain fresh supplies. One message read: “It took eight of us to load them this morning.”

Customers can select between powder vials, mixed at home with purified liquid, or ready-to-use pens usually sold at 160 pounds for 20 milligrams. When questioned how much time a pen should last, vendors give conflicting answers ranging from a few weeks to “depends on your body”.

Service Moderation and Safety Measures

A representative for the messaging service said it actively moderated dangerous content on its platform including content that encouraged the “misuse of controlled medications”. The organization added that it removed “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.

Medical Expert Cautions

“Individuals are administering substances they cannot confirm. Even if the research behind retatrutide is sound, these online products may not contain what they claim,” said Jason Murphy, the head of pharmacy at Chemist4U.

A medical professional of an online medical service linked the surge in interest to current cost increases for authorized slimming medications such as Mounjaro. “With costs rising, patients are using social media. But counterfeit injections are extremely risky. You can’t be certain what’s inside or whether the environment they were produced in was sterile,” she explained.

Her team has already seen individuals harmed by self-injection from unverified sources. “We recognize the disappointment, but purchasing from messaging apps or communication platforms is taking chances with your well-being,” said Wyllie. “These materials could be impure or improperly measured.”

Manufacturer Position

A spokesperson from Eli Lilly said the substance was in third stage clinical trials and had not been reviewed or approved by any regulatory agency anywhere in the world. “Consequently at this point no one can market [it] for human use,” they said, adding that any product “misleadingly claiming itself as a Lilly experimental substance not yet approved … may expose patients to possibly significant health risks”.
